Shak Pershey, a high school quarterback, drowned in the waters off the coast of North Carolina on Thursday.

Pershey was last seen swimming about 100 yards off shore at 7 p.m. on Thursday evening, according to the Examiner, when the 19-year-old did not emerge from the water, a search and rescue mission was launched.

Both the Coast Guard and the Marine Corps searched the waters of North Topsail Beach for nearly two hours before inclement weather forced them to call off the search, according to CBS affiliate WBTV.

Police who continued to look for the high school student found Pershey's body off of North Topsail Beach at around 2 a.m. on Friday morning.

"I believe the young man may have been caught in some sort of cross current that may have pulled him down," said Stuart Turille, town manager of North Topsail Beach, according to WNCT.

Pershey was the star quarterback for the Southwest Onslow High Stallions and helped the team clinch the state football championships earlier this school year, according to the school's website.

The young Pershey was just a few weeks shy of his June 11 graduation day. After receiving his high school diploma, Pershey was planning on attending Chowan University, according to WNCT.
