Mary Mara has died. The actress was 61. 

Mary Mara Real Cause of Death: Accidental Drowning While Exercising? 

According to the New York State Police, actress Mary Mara drowned in the Saint Lawrence River while swimming. 

In a statement provided to Variety, Mara's manager Craig Dorfman confirmed the actress' tragic passing. "Mary was one of the finest actresses I ever met," Dorfman wrote. "I still remember seeing her onstage in 1992 in 'Mad Forest' off Broadway. She was electric, funny and a true individual. Everyone loved her. She will be missed." 

The "Ray Donovan" actress was discovered in the hamlet of Cape Vincent on Sunday morning. 

At before 8 a.m., troopers went to a report of a probable drowning in the river; upon arrival, they discovered her body in the water. According to officials, she was visiting her sister when she plunged into the river for exercise.

Investigation: Foul Play Involved? 

The early investigation revealed no indications of wrongdoing. The Jefferson County Medical Examiner's Office performed an autopsy on her body. 

Mara, a native of Syracuse, appeared in numerous television programs and films. She appeared in 20 films and 40 television programs. Her television roles include "ER," "NYPD Blue," "Law & Order," and "Lost." 

In addition, she starred in "Mr. Saturday Night," "The Hard Way," and "Love Potion No. 9." 

Mara was born and raised in Syracuse, New York, before attending San Francisco State University and Yale for her education. She began her film and television career in 1989 with the telefilm "The Preppie Murder" and went on to accumulate over 80 cinematic credits. Her famous projects include "ER," in which she played recurring patient Loretta Sweet, and "Nash Bridges," a police procedural in which she starred as investigator Bryn Carson. 

Mara acted alongside Michelle Pfeiffer, Jeff Goldblum, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, and Gregory Hines in a production of "Twelfth Night" at the New York Shakespeare Festival. In the 1990 Yale Repertory Theatre production of Anton Chekhov's "Ivanov," she starred alongside William Hurt. 

Mara made her film debut in 1992 with "Love Potion No. 9," and the following year she appeared in "Mr. Saturday Night" as Billy Crystal's daughter. Other works include "Bound," "A Civil Action," "K-Pax," and "Gridiron Gang." After starring in "Break Even" in 2020, Mara resigned from acting and returned to Syracuse. 

Stepdaughter Katie Mersola, sisters Martha Mara and Susan Dailey, brother-in-law Scott Dailey, and nephew Christopher Dailey are Mara's surviving relatives.
