One of the stars of Boardwalk Empire is set to guest star as the new handler on FX's The Americans in season 2.

Philip & Elizabeth's Kids Unstable in Season 2?

Wrenn Schmidt who plays Julia Sagorsky on Boardwalk Empire, is set to play Kate, the new KGB handler to Philip (Matthew Rhys) and Elizabeth (Keri Russell). Kate is very different from Philip and Elizabeth's previous handler Claudia (Margo Martindale), who was shipped back to the Soviet Union in the season 1 finale.

"We spent a lot of time talking about who the new handler should be," The Americans executive producer Joel Fields told TVLine recently. "And we thought, 'Well, if we're running the center, and it didn't work out with Claudia, who would we send? Let's find Claudia's polar opposite. Let's send somebody who is going to keep Philip and Elizabeth happy and encourage them to do their job well."

Fields' fellow executive producer Joe Weisberg added that there was no particular reason for a handler to be "dishonest or particularly manipulative," as Claudia proved to be. Weisberg teased: "There's no reason not to try to be fundamentally open."

Schmidt's IMDb page lists her as starring in episodes 5-7 of season 2, though this has not officially been confirmed elsewhere.

In other The Americans spoiler news, the spy drama will be dealing with the powers of the Internet in an upcoming episode. The eighth episode of season 2, which is titled ARPANET, will feature an exploration of what would eventually become the World Wide Web.

"At the time when it was first created, the military was on there, the universities were on there and the scientists were on there and there was no security," Fields explained to TV Guide in a recent report. "Anybody who had access to it had access to everything." The KGB has special access to ARPANET, which is likely where Philip and Elizabeth enter the picture.

The Americans season 2 airs Wednesdays at 10 p.m. on FX.
