$100 Million Shakira Lawsuit: Ex-Boyfriend 'Didn't Really Want To Do This'
Shakira's ex-boyfriend/manager filed a $100 million New York lawsuit against the singer for not paying him his share of her business profits after they broke up, though he had hoped that they would not end up in a legal battle, according to his lawyer.
William T. Reid IV said Monday that his client and Shakira's ex, Antonio de la Rua, tried to talk to the singer and get the money owed to him, but the Colombian singer refused. Reid said Rua "didn't really want to do this," but nevertheless, the lawsuit was filed on Nov. 20, according to The Associated Press.
Shakira's representatives and her attorneys at the law firm Fox Horan & Camerini LPP have not made any public comment regarding the allegations made, the news report added.
Rúa and Shakira started dating in 2000 and after her 2004 tour, she asked him to take over "the business behind the Shakira brand," according to The New York Post.
Under Rúa's management, the "Loca" singer earned "tens of millions of dollars" touring and scored a $300 million deal with Live Nation, according to the lawsuit filed in Manhattan Supreme Court. Rua was fired by Shakira's lawyer in October of 2011, in an unrelated matter, but according to the suit, the Columbian singer stopped paying Rua any of the profits or property rightfully his even before that time.
Rua's lawsuit claimed that their business contact extended through October 2011 but the singer stopped paying him after they broke up in 2010.
Shakira is currently pregnant with her first child with Spanish soccer player Gerard Pique. In an interview with German broadcaster RTL, she confirmed that she and Piqué are expecting a baby boy and the Spanish media website elnuevodia.com reported that they will name their son Biel.
