Mortal Instruments fans should buckle their seatbelts for a few unexpected Shadowhunters twists.

'Shadowhunters' TV Show: Much Bigger Role For Magnus Bane [PHOTOS], Cassandra Clare Explains

Clary Fray (Katherine McNamara) is ready to bring the New York City supernatural underworld to ABC Family, but viewers shouldn't expect Shadowhunters to trot out a word for word adaptation of Cassandra Clare's novels. No, the upcoming series will up the ante with some nerve-wracking turns of their own.

"We're not doing Cassie's interpretation of the books," McNamara told Zap2It. "We're not doing the film's interpretation of the books. We're taking our own path, for each character and story, and making it our own new incarnation of it."

That doesn't mean your favorite YA novel is about to pull an Insurgent. McNamara, who is also a fan of the books, promises that Clare's work will still shine through, just with a little bit more of a sexy, edgy, "horror" vibe.

"It's good to have a few surprises," McNamara said, according to Zap2It. "A few shocking moments and twists and turns [book readers] won't see coming, as well as the people who are new to the series who have a completely open mind about things."
