When The Vampire Diaries began diving into the history of the Original family fans became so wrapped up in Klaus (Joseph Morgan), Elijah (Daniel Gillies) and the rest of the emotionally damaged family.
During the fourth season of The Vampire Diaries a backdoor pilot into The Originals aired, giving many more details of the family's past. This was in April 2013 and then the spin-off was officially picked up and premiered in October of that same year.

The Vampire Diaries is heading into its seventh season and The Originals is heading into its third, but TVD has some new baddies in town that have the same allure that the Original family did when they were first introduced. Lily (Annie Wersching) and her family of heretics have been reunited and they are definitely going to cause trouble in Mystic Falls.
Julie Plec, the brains behind The Vampire Diaries and The Originals, revealed to Digital Spy that another spin-off is possible.
"I never would've thought that The Vampire Diaries would have a viable spin-off until I met the Originals," she shared, adding, "It had more to do with the actors that we cast than with the characters - they were so good that we wrote more for them, and then they took up so much space that they earned their own series."
So basically if the actors who have been cast as Lily's heretics wow the audience the way those did that are in the roles of the Originals then another spin-off could totally happen.
"I look at the casting of the heretics and I think, 'Oh, they're interesting - could they be their own show?' - so it's one of those [where] we'll see," she concluded.
