'Minions' Movie News: Film Joins Record History Crossing $1 Billion Mark [VIDEO]
Minions has crossed the $1 billion mark at the box office becoming the third in animated films to bring in that kind of money, and also adding to Universal's winning streak with animated titles.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Minions has sealed Universal's hat trick, by being the third movie -- following Frozen and Toy Story 3 -- this year to have made $1 billion under the Universal banner. Furious 7 and Jurassic World raked in the billion for Universal this year.
The movie's worldwide billings are sure to bring us a sequel. Minions was released in June.
The yellow fever took over after they wooed people with their adorability in the Despicable Me movies and the mania has assuredly found an international audience.
Minions is the fifth movie for Illumination Entertainment, which has previously released Despicable Me, Dr. Seuss' The Lorax and Despicable Me 2.
A Variety report revealed that in 11 territories -- Hungary, Indonesia, Latvia, Lithuania, the Philippines, Russia, Slovakia, Thailand, Ukraine, U.A.E. and Vietnam -- the movie has completely taken over, becoming the highest-grossing animated title. The report adds that in France, Germany, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Russia and Slovakia, the movie is Universal's highest-grossing film.
The cash registers are just going to continue to ring, as the movie is yet to release in Turkey (Sept. 4). China (Sept. 13) and Greece (Sept. 24). China is a massive market for Hollywood movies and this means real Minion potential hasn't been comepletely tapped yet.
