ABC has released the synopsis for season 5 of ABC's Once Upon a Time, revealing the theme to be an exploration of never giving up on those you love.

The season 5 synopsis for Once Upon a Time was released by ABC recently, and while it doesn't tell us much that we don't already know, it provides an official context for where we will be when season 5 premieres.

The synopsis is as follows:

Henry Will Have His First 'Crush' on 'Once Upon a Time'

"'Once Upon a Time' returns to the ABC Television Network for its fifth season and master storytellers Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz ('Lost,' 'Tron: Legacy') invite everyone to join Emma Swan, Snow White, Prince Charming, The Evil Queen, Hook and all the other resident fairytale characters as they cope with Emma's new role as The Dark One and begin the search for Merlin. This is a journey that will take our heroes from the Enchanted Forest to Camelot and along the way bring many surprises, including encounters with a brave and headstrong Scottish princess named Merida."

The show is picking up where it left off in the season 4 finale, with Emma (Jennifer Morrison) being swallowed into darkness. Regina (Lana Parrilla), Snow (Ginnifer Goodwin), Charming (Josh Dallas), Henry (Jared Gilmore) and Hook (Colin O'Donoghue) will be left picking up the pieces and going on a quest to get Emma back to the side of good.

"As the season continues, new fairy tale characters will be revealed and old acquaintances will be revisited," the synopsis continues. "Not everyone can be trusted but one thing remains true - you never give up on the people you love..."

This certainly seems to relate to Emma's plight though it will be interesting to see how the theme of never giving up on the ones you love is explored in other relationships.

Once Upon a Time season 5 premieres Sunday, Sept. 27 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
