'Django Unchained': Spike Lee Rips Quentin Tarantino Film
Spike Lee has made it admantly clear that he does not support and will not see "Django Unchained."
The Quentin Tarantino-helmed film that was released in theaters on Christmas day has sparked criticism from Lee because of its graphic depiction of slavery.
In an interview with VIBE magazine that features the film's stars on the cover of the latest issue- Jamie Foxx, Leonardo DiCaprio and Kerry Washington- Lee said he will not see the movie because he feels it's "disrespectful."
"I can't speak on it 'cause I'm not gonna see it," Lee told Vibe Magazine. "All I'm going to say is that it's disrespectful to my ancestors. That's just me... I'm not speaking on behalf of anybody else."
Later, Lee sent a tweet that further denounced the film that features whippings and use of the "n" word, over 110 times.
"American Slavery Was Not A Sergio Leone Spaghetti Western. It Was A Holocaust. My Ancestors Are Slaves. Stolen From Africa. I Will Honor Them," Lee tweeted.
Lee received criticism for his comments, both for and against his stance. He fired back at one follower who told him it was just a movie.
"Wrong. Birth Of A Nation Got Black Folks Lynced [sic]. Media Is Powerful. DON'T SLEEP. WAKE UP YO," Lee responded on Twitter.
