Obama Inauguration 2013; Beyonce Joining Kelly Clarkson And James Taylor At Swear-In Ceremony
Kelly Clarkson, Beyoncé and James Taylor are scheduled to perform at President Barack Obama's inauguration.
Clarkson, 30, Beyoncé, 31, and Taylor, 64, will sing at Obama's second swearing-in ceremony on Jan. 21. The inaugural event will take place at the West Front of the U.S. Capitol.
The Presidential Inaugural Committee states that Clarkson will perform "My Country 'Tis of Thee," Taylor will sing "America the Beautiful" and Beyoncé will sing the National Anthem.
According to Huffington Post, the president personally handpicked the performers. The Committee also stated that more participants will be announced ahead of the ceremony.
In 2009, legendary soul singer Aretha Franklin sang "My Country Tis Of Thee" at Obama's first swear-in and Beyoncé sang an emotional rendition of Etta James' classic "At Last" during the president and first lady's first dance at the Neighborhood Inaugural Ball. The R&B singer cried during her performance and later revealed that it was an emotional experience for her because she was "honored" to have been chosen to sing for the president.
Beyoncé's inaugural performance is the latest addition to her already jam-packed schedule in the New Year. She is rumored to be releasing new music later this month. Next month she will perform at the Super Bowl halftime show at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans and she is currently putting the finishing touches to her HBO documentary that she directed and executive-produced. The untitled film will air in February.
The inaugural gig is a nice follow-up for the recently engaged Clarkson who had a busy year last year. In December she performed during the season 3 finale of the hit singing reality competition "The Voice." In February of 2012 she sang the "Star Spangled Banner" at the Super Bowl and last summer she starred in ABC's singing competition "Duets." The season 1 "American Idol" winner starred alongside John Legend, Robin Thicke and Jennifer Nettles.
