Jon Chu Death Threats: Director Says He Got 'Hate Mail,' 'Racist Remarks' & 'Death Threats' For 'Jem and the Holograms' [VIDEO]
After his film Jem and the Holograms was critically panned and also bombed at the box office, Jon Chu took the stage while giving his keynote address at the Film Independent Forum, and graciously spoke about his failure.
While Chu addressed his failing with the film adaptation of Jem and the Holograms he also made shocking revelations about hate mail he received from fans of the 1980s TV series.
"I get fans sending me hate mail, I get death threats, I get racist remarks - it's a really fun business," he said. "Reviewers have been harsh, to say it lightly."
Chu was obviously pretty down on himself and didn't hide his emotions on stage, as he was fresh off the failure of the film which released on Oct. 23.
"Yes, we only made the movie for five [million dollars], but it doesn't get easy when you hear those [box office] numbers," said Chu. "I'll probably get some texts along the way today saying it's not going well...So this morning isn't the best kind of day."
But the director, who has also helmed G.I. Joe Retaliation and Step Up [3D], ended on a hopeful note.
"Ultimately," he added, "we are not defined by our results; we are defined by the purpose of our pursuits. It's about the whole journey-the collection of stories that define what you stand for. We are storytellers, in every sense of the word. We're here because we love it."
