Ahead of tonight's Don't Be Tardy season four finale, Zolciak revealed she was with her 4-year-old son, Kroy Jagger, when she leaned down to hug him and felt a "tingling sensation" throughout her body.
"I thought, 'If I pass out in front of my kids, they're just going to die!'" Zolciak recalled to PEOPLE Magazine on Wednesday. "I kept telling myself 'Kim, you better keep yourself together.' "
After discovering she had a hole in her heart, which required urgent surgery, Zolciak put on a brave face for her children, but KJ was understandable impacted.
"It's been hard on my kids, but KJ has taken it the worst," Zolciak explained. "I was trying to tell my nanny to take him away during the the whole thing, but she was too worried about me. He has been kind of difficult to handle, and it finally hit me a few days ago. He knew I was going to have surgery, and he kept asking every night, 'Mommy is it tomorrow?' It broke my heart."
Weeks later, with a successful heart surgery behind her, her 4-year-old is doing much better.
"He's a totally different baby now that it's over," she revealed. "He came in right after the surgery and spent the night with me. He actually asked me this morning, 'No more hospitals, right Mommy?' And I was like, 'No more, honey.' "
