Jo (Jodi Lyn O'Keefe) is kind of back on The Vampire Diaries thanks to some wicked magic and the phoenix stone.

By "kind of" we mean physically O'Keefe is portraying Jo, but storyline-wise, the magic and phoenix stone Bonnie (Kat Graham) used to resurrect the dead witch, actually brought back the spirit of a vampire so Jo isn't quite herself.

O'Keefe chatted with TVLine recently about returning to the popular supernatural CW series after being killed off last season.

"I got the call telling me I was on hold for such-and-such a date to go back, and my jaw dropped," the actress shared about finding out she would be back this season, adding, "I was like, 'I'm not the only one to stay dead on this show? Yes!'"

She dished on her approach to portraying Jo, but not really portraying Jo, which for her means treating the situation like "amnesia" since the spirit inside Jo's body recalls nothing.

"Regardless of who or what this is inside Jo, she doesn't know anything. So it's a clean slate at the moment, which is really kind of nice, because you get to discover who she is as you go along," O'Keefe said.

It turns out the vampire spirit inside Jo is known by O'Keefe, but she didn't spill those details; however, she did reveal there will be a lot of self-discovery for the character.

"Self-discovery, and a lot of it. She'll be figuring out who she is and where she came from and what's happening. It's like a baby being born," she stated.

The Vampire Diaries airs on Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
