"Life experiences are just really big influences for the album. Stuff that I've been through, especially with the last five years and being in the band and everything," Malik says in the video.
He then shares that his solo debut is "quite personal" even admitting that plenty of its recording was done "out in the woods."
Why record outside? Well, he thought it would help "make it quite real and genuine."
The 22-year-old is definitely glad he's doing what he truly desires.
"It's a nice feeling to come out of a place where you are being told what to do and to be a certain way because of certain expectations or certain things that people want to see. It is just all my perspective and that's fully liberating," he says in the video.
A tiny bit more of the interview was teased on The FADER's website, in which Malik says he feels as though people have no clue what to expect from him as a solo artist.
"I don't feel like people really know what I'm going to give them, musically," he dished, explaining, "And once they hear it, I feel like they will understand me a little bit more, and they'll understand why I did what I did, and why I left the band, and why I had to write this shit down. Because for five-not even for five years, for ten years, this album has been in my brain, and it's just been there, sat with me, needing to be out."
