'Zoolander 2' Trailer Arrives With An Unrecognizable Benedict Cumberbatch
Gods of Egypt, which takes place in Ancient Egypt, centers on Bek (Brenton Thwaites), a thief who teams up with the god of sky and kinship Horus (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) to take revenge on Set (Gerard Butler), the god of darkness. Notice anything about these three actors? They're all very white.
The film has run into loads of controversy since casting began, with accusations of whitewashing Egyptians, who are traditionally thought to have a much darker skin tone. While the characters in Gods of Egypt at least look tan, it will be hard for some to overlook the whiteness of almost all of the main characters.
Here Are All The New Movies & Shows Uploading To Netflix In November
Since the early days of cinema, Hollywood has faced its fair share of criticism regarding whitewashing in films of all kinds. The topic has come up frequently over the past few years, among films like Exodus: Gods and Kings, The Lone Ranger, Noah, Aloha and Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. Even classic films like Breakfast at Tiffany's, Lawrence of Arabia and West Side Story have at least one white actor playing a member of a different race, to varying degrees of egregiousness.
It remains to be seen if Gods of Egypt will be greatly affected financially by the controversy.
Gods of Egypt is scheduled for release in theaters on Feb. 26, 2016.
