Amy Schumer thinks all the vitriolic hate thrown at her for her gun control stance has been way too extreme.

Amy Schumer Reveals What Her Memoir Will Be Like

Schumer teamed up with her cousin Chuck Schumer, a New York senator, to advocate for gun control over the past few months. This was following a deadly shooting in a Louisiana theater showing Amy's film Trainwreck over the summer.

Amy received a lot of flak on social media for her position on guns, and now she's fighting back - through comedy, of course. The comedian explained in a standup routine at the Baby Buggy Gala Monday that she was simply advocating for gun control for the mentally ill and domestic violence abusers.

Amy Schumer Reveals What's Been 'A Struggle' Her Whole Life

"Nobody really likes when famous people get involved in politics because you're just like, 'Eww, shut up, you're an idiot.' And you're like, 'Okay, you're right.' But there was a shooting during one of the screenings of my movie this summer in July in Lafayette, Louisiana, and these two girls, Mayci Breaux and Jillian Johnson, died, and I was very, very upset," she explained.

The comedian explained how everything was blow out of proportion.

"All we were fighting for was for people who have been convicted of domestic violence or if they are severely mentally ill, like, I don't think you should be able to get a gun. Just again, I want to say: convicted of domestic abuse or if you're severely mentally ill that you not be able to get a gun. Which seems pretty simple, but I've learned through Twitter and live events that what a lot of people hear is 'You want to take all our guns!'" Amy recalled. "I'm like, 'Oh my god, no, you seem great. You should get more guns.' I'm just talking about the severely mentally ill - 'You're taking all our amendments. What's next - you're going to f--- animals?' And I'm like, 'I've been f---ing animals for my whole life, sir.'"

Amy is coming off a banner year with the success of her Comedy Central sketch show Inside Amy Schumer, for which she won an Emmy, her summer hit comedy Trainwreck and a hosting stint on Saturday Night Live.
