Laura Dekker Breaks Record at 16 Sailing the Globe in 1 Year [PHOTOS]
A 16 year old girl from Netherlands, Laura Dekker, completed a journey around the globe on a sailboat today, after one year of departing for the adventure.
She claims to be the youngest sailor to complete such a journey but Guiness World Records and the World Sailing Speed Record Council are not backing her up.
The organizations claim that they no longer acknowledge records for the "Youngest sailor" to discourage dangerous attempts, AP reports.
Dekker completed her journey Today when she arrived on her sailboat "Guppy" at St. Maarten, an island in the East of the Caribbean. She departed from the same spot on January 20, 2011.
While making her journey, she donated ten percent of each donated EURO to Sea Shepherd Netherlands, an organization whose mission is to end the slaughter of wildlife in the world's oceans.
Before she embarked to the journey, several Dutch officials tried to block her trip saying she was too young to risk her life. School authorities have also complained and say she should be in a classroom.
