Google Glass 2 Patent Reveals Monocle Design Following Release Date Rumors [VIDEO]
New patent information surfaced on the Web to reveal that the resurrection of Google Glass could arrive in the near future. The search engine giant placed the "Explorer Program" Glass Project on pause in January, halting sales of the device to regroup for a relaunch. Although it hasn't come into fruition just yet, Google promised to release the new version of Google Glass during 2015.
One look at the official patent documents supports rumors that Google Glass 2 is set for a January 2016 release date in the UK. The Mountain View based search engine giant is setting its sights on a new and improved version of the next big wearable tech innovation. The successor to the intital trial run of the personal viewing design is expected to have a monocle design.
As CNET reports, Google was granted a patent by the US Patent and Trademark Office Tuesday with the title "Wearable Device with Input and Output Structure". The document spills design and specification details about the device and includes sketches of what the final prototype would look like. Based on the description found in the patent, the next time we see Google Glass, it will likely feature a small display element that is suspended in front of one eye. The construction of the device will be made to be worn on one side of the head and rest across the user's ear and temple. The band will of be adjustable for a precise custom fit and the personal viewing device will be capable of generating images to the user on the display. According to the patent, single directional circuitry and a touch-sensitive surface will enable touch-based input into the device by the wearer.
Google Glass has already been implemented in the operating room to assist doctors performing surgery. Without having to direct their attention away from what they're doing, doctors use Google glass to monitor a patient's vital signs and reaction to changes during surgery. From what we can tell from that patent, Google Glass 2 is going to be more of low profile wearable device and will likely be geared more towards use for work over play. Within the coming weeks as more details began to be revealed, we may see Google Glass arrive in early 2016.
