Rubin Singer, Beyonce Super Bowl Dress Designer; Outfit Required Team Of 14, Over 200 Hours For Her & 120 Dancers' Looks
Beyonce's performance during the Super Bowl halftime show at the Mercedes Benz Superdome in New Orleans wasn't the only thing electrifying. The "Halo" singer's padded shoulder corset and short black leather skirt with knee-high boots won rave reviews in fashion reports.
When the 31-year-old arrived on stage to perform her opening hit, "Crazy In Love" in a cropped motorcycle jacket with padded shoulders with a mini-wrap skirt, later, she tore off both items and revealed a beautiful intricate lace-detail leather skirt and leather corseted bodysuit.
Fashionistas were quickly abuzz on Twitter on whether the outfit was created by Beyoncé's previous fashion collaborators, Thierry Mugler or Gareth Pugh (Mugler and Pugh are French designers who have worked with the Houston native on her previous tours and music videos.) To everyone's surprise, her outfit was designed by New York-based fashion designer Rubin Singer.
Singer, who has worked with Glenn Cose, Leah Michele and Alicia Keys, sent a press release that stated that he worked with Beyoncé's wardrobe stylists- Ty Hunter and Raquel Smith- right after Thanksgiving. Since the beginning of December, the designer worked with Beyoncé and her wardrobe team for a series of meetings that included not less than five fittings with the mother-of-one. It took the support of a staff of 14 and over 200 man hours for Singer to execute the vision. Singer and his crew were hard at work every day in New Orleans during the last week leading up to the Super Bowl XLVII on Feb. 3.
Singer said her opening look's micro-mini asymmetrical wrap skirt was made of "liquid nylon," a fabric made of nylon, metal, silk and plastic.
"This piece is truly couture in every way," Singer told The Hollywood Reporter. "My seamstresses were assembling all of the leather and exotic skins individually by hand. All of the pieces were separate details that were all constructed on her body. We had to make the bodysuit have a tremendous range of motion and flexibility. Beyoncé is such a fierce and intense performer; we could not have the outfit constrict her in any way."
Singer said the leather bodysuit was made of "engineered python, paneled iguana and trapunto-pick stitched leather" sewn together and her skirt had panels of "delicate black Chantilly lace."
Singer also created the costumes for Destiny's Child bandmate Michelle Williams as well as the jackets for the show's 120 backup dancers.
The stage costumes are based on Singer's upcoming fall 2013 collection which he will present during New York Fashion Week next week. Buyers and press can preview the collection on Feb. 12 and 13 by appointment only.
