Cissy Houston Disgusted By Clive Davis' Grammy Party Invitation
It may have been a gesture of kindness, but Cissy Houston said she was disgusted when she received an invitation to Clive Davis' annual Grammy Party. The party has been a pre-Grammy tradition since 1976. Sadly, it is also now synonymous with the day Whitney Houston died while getting ready for the industry event in her Beverly Hills hotel room.
Cissy was in New York this week attending the unveiling of four wax statues memorializing her daughter's career highlights at Madame Tussaud's wax museum. The four Whitney Houston statues will be placed at the museum's locations in New York City, Washington D.C., Los Angeles and Las Vegas. The four statues showcased different eras of Whitney's career. The statue of her in a white dress and pumps reflects her 1988 music video, 'I Wanna Dance With Somebody', the track suit statue represents Whitney's classic 'Star Spangled Banner' performance in 1991, the black and silver beaded number represents her in "The Body Guard" in 1992, and the shimmering gold evening gown is a homage to Whitney's 'I Look to You' album.
While at the event, Cissy discussed her displeasure with receiving an invitation to the very same place her daughter died.
"I got an invitation to the party - which is the most obscene thing, "Cissy told Access Hollywood. "I don't know why they would want me to come to the party in which she died, you know? Unheard of:"
Giving Davis' the benefit of the doubt she added, "I guess maybe he just sent me a copy for remembrance sake."
Houston, 79, is instead opting to watch the Grammy's at home. A rep for Access Hollywood confirmed that Pat Houston and Gary Houston are expected to attend the gala.
Prior to the news of Cissy's disappointment, Clive Davis spoke to MTV about the party and how he plans to honor Whitney.
"We're going to keep that tradition and celebrate her, celebrate music and mark the occasion of the one-year anniversary of her premature, tragic passing."
Whitney died on Feb. 11, 2012, at the age of 48. The singer was expected to make her big comeback and was set to appear at Clive Davis' annual Pre-Grammy gala. Her body was discovered face down in a bath tub and she died of accidental drowning with cocaine in her system.
