Emma Watson Defends Kristen Stewart on Rupert Sanders Affair: Everyone Makes Mistakes
In the March 2013 issue of Vanity Fair Italia, Emma Watson sticks up for her best friend Kristen Stewart and said the public had no place criticizing her. The Harry Potter actress thought it was wrong how Stewart was treated by the media following her infidelity scandal. Last year, Stewart was caught cheating on boyfriend Robert Pattinson with her “Snow White and the Huntsmen” director, Rupert Sanders by Us Weekly photographers.
“Those who criticized her are the same people that thing being rich and famous is like being covered in some kid of magic power that makes life perfect: Nothing can go wrong in your wonderful world," Watson said. “For these people, Kristen deserves all the bad things that have been thrown at her because she had an amazing life and she ruined it.”
When the photos of Stewart and Sanders in an intimate embrace leaked, media outlets trashed the indiscretion – briefly calling the actress a “trampire”, a cruel pun about her role in the Twilight Saga movies. The Harry Potter actress felt it was horrible how her friend was portrayed in the media and believed her private life was not a public matter.
“I don’t know how to explain it, but it sure isn’t perfect. I thought that the media picked on her in a very horrible way. Kristen is human, just like everybody else and she’s so young. Everyone makes mistakes, everyone. It’s not fair to consider them matters of public interest.”
Watson, 22, also said being famous is more difficult than it appears especially when trying to maintain a level of privacy while trying to repair a public image. “On one hand, I can understand why it happened; people felt really involved in her relationship with Robert Pattinson. But it’s also true that they both have done everything in their power to keep their relationship as far from the public eye as possible. “
Stewart and Pattinson have since moved on from the scandal. Liberty Ross filed for divorce from Rupert Sanders last month.
