iOS 6.1 Security Bugs: Flaw Allows Hackers to Bypass iPhone 5 Lock Screen, Access Photos, Contacts [Video]
Apple users running iOS 6.1 on their phones may have a security problem as a new bug could potentially allow anyone to access their devices.
The process to hack devices that run on the operating system was posted in a YouTube video by user VideosdeBarraquito on Jan. 31.
The apparent security flaw is shown on an iPhone 5 and can be exploited on phones running Apple's iOS 6.1, the most recent version of its mobile operating system, and some earlier versions, according to CNET.
The process involves using another phone placed nearby to make a call to the phone, canceling it, then answering with the targeted phone and fiddling with the power button.
The person that posted the technique gave written instructions in the About section of the video. The user also stated that the bypass could be fun "to joke with your friends. To do a magic show. To win a harmless bet among friends in a PUB. Perhaps, to retrieve a phone number in case you don't remember the password, or just to be warned that exists."
However, VideosdeBarraquito gave a warning about applying the hack.
"Use it as you want, at your own risk, but... please... use responsibly, do not use this trick to do evil !!!," the user wrote.
The technique will also apparently give people access to modify contacts, check voicemail and look through photos, according to SlashGear. However it will not give hackers access to other parts of the hacked devices.
This is not the only Apple hack video that VideosdeBarraquito posted as there are others that appear to show other ways to tweak settings on the iPhone.
Apple recently released iOS 6.1 and another update was released last week to users in order to fix reported bugs.
The latest patch, iOS 6.1.1, was produced in an effort to enhance Apple's iOS 6.1 which added a handful of useful features to the iPhone, iPad and iPod, bringing LTE support to 36 more carriers around the globe, as well as improvements to iTunes Match and Siri.
Another patch will reportedly be released soon to fix an iOS 6.1 Exchange sync bug, according to Mac Rumors.
It is unknown if the next bug patch will fix the current phone hack as well.
