The 85th annual Oscars airs on Feb. 24 and the ceremony has come a long way since the first Academy Awards, which was held as a private banquet with 270 guests in attendance.

The first ceremony took place during a private Academy banquet at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, according to the Academy's official website. Held in the hotel's Blossom Room on May 16, 1929, the event was attended by 270 people and guest tickets cost $5. Academy President at the time, Douglas Fairbanks, handed out all the statues and the recipients had already been announced three months earlier. German actor Emil Jannings received the first ever Academy Award. He took home the honor of Best Actor for his work in two films, the only year multiple roles were considered: The Last Command and The Way of All Flesh.

At the award ceremony held on Feb. 23, 1939, Walt Disney presented actress Shirley Temple with an Oscar. She was given the award not for role in a particular film, but "in grateful recognition of her outstanding contribution to screen entertainment during the year 1934." That same night Temple presented Disney with the Honorary Academy Award for Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, which was the top-grossing film of all time at the point. During the 74th awards in 2001, the Animated Feature Film Award was added and Shrek took home the honor.

At the 83rd award show in 2011, James Franco and Anne Hathaway hosted the Oscars together. They carried some laughs when they switched wardrobes and their opening monologues garnered some applause when they drew attention tho their relatives in the audience. Oscars winners that year included Natalie Portman, Colin Firth, Christina Bale, The King's Speech, The Social Network and Inception. That year Franco received his first Oscar nomination,
