BEST ACTRESS NOMINEES:
Jessica Chastain, Zero Dark Thirty
Jennifer Lawrence, Silver Linings Playbook
Emmanuelle Riva, Amour
Naomi Watts, The Impossible
Quvenzhané Wallis, Beasts of the Southern Wild
Lawrence called the other woman in the category "magnificent" and "incredible" before thanking her film's entire cast, crew and her family.
Riva at the age of 85 became the oldest Best Actress nominee in the Academy's history. At the opposite end of the spectrum, Wallis, 9, became the youngest ever Best Actress Oscar nominee for her performance in the end of the world movie Beasts of the Southern Wild, which also garnered a nod for its first time director Benh Zeitlin.
The last time Watts was nominated for an Academy Award was in 2004. She received a Best Actress nomination for her role as a grieving mother in 21 Grams.
Both Lawrence and Chastain took home awards at the Golden Globes this year. However, Lawrence's talked about performance as Tiffany in her film prompted MTV to predict only days before the award show that her "screen legacy make her a threat worth factoring." The same report added that Chastain would not have as strong of a chance to win because of Zero Dark Thirty and "as many sensationalized news stories predicted, the controversy surrounding the film's depiction of torture and what the sequences do or do not imply seems to have impacted its awards presence."
