Daniel Day-Lewis took home the Oscar for Best Actor in a Leading Role at the Academy Awards on Sunday beating out contenders such as Bradley Cooper, Hugh Jackman, Denzel Washington and Joaquin Phoenix.

In the Steven Spielberg-directed film Lincoln, Day-Lewis played the 16th president of the Untied States and his efforts to abolish slavery in the midst of war. The film led this year's nominations, including nods for Best Picture, Best Director, and acting honors for Sally Field and Tommy Lee Jones. Day-Lewis' win made him the first actor ever to win three Oscars in the category of Best Actor in a Leading Role.

In acceptance speech on Sunday Day-Lewis joked around with Meryl Streep, who presented him the award, and told the audience he was originally planning on playing the role of Margaret Thatcher, with Streep scheduled to play Lincoln. He told the audience, and Spielberg sitting front and center, that would be the version of Lincoln he would love to see.

Born in London, England, Day-Lewis beat Cooper and Jackman whom both received their first ever Oscar nomination this year for their film roles.Phoenix was nominated for a Best Actor in a Leading Role Oscar in 2006 for Walk the Line and Best Actor in a Supporting Role in 2001 for Gladiator. Washington won two Academy Awards before: in 1990 for Glory and in 2002 for Training Day.
