Anne Hathaway won the award for Best Supporting Actress at the 85th Annual Academy Awards on Sunday, her first Oscar win and her second ever nomination.
The Les Miserables star played in the film a dying prostitute named Fantine who makes an emotional and spiritual connection with Hugh Jackman's character Jean Valjean after she daughter is left in his care. The film received eight Oscar nominations on Sunday including Best Motion Picture of the Year and a Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role for Jackman.
Hathaway beat fellow nominees in the category Sally Fields, Amy Adams, Helen Hunt and Jacki Weaver. In her acceptance speech, the first thing Hathaway said was "It came true."
Hathaway has been nominated for an Oscar only once before - in 2009 for her leading role in Rachel Getting Married.
The actress on Sunday thanked her the other nominees in the category, saying "I look up to you all so much and it's just been such an honor." She then singled out her costar and said, "I must thank Hugh Jackman. Hugh, you're the best."
"I want to thank my friends, especially the ones who are cheering from Crosby Street tonight," she continued. "My family, who I'm so blessed to be a part of. My husband. By far and away, the greatest moment of my life is the one when you walked into it. I love you so much. And thank you for this.
"Here's hoping that someday in the not too distant future the misfortunes of Fantine will only be found in stories and never in real life. Thank you."
