Seth MacFarlene Oscars Opening Monologue, Recap: Pokes Fun and Jokes [VIDEO]
Actor Seth MacFarlane managed to steal the spotlight the 85th Academy Annual Awards Sunday night by showing off his dance and singing skills, and insulted not only nominees of the awards show, but celebrities who have made headlines lately.
With an opening song, called "We Saw Your Boobs," MacFarlane called out actresses who have gone topless on the big screen. MacFarlane also dressed as a flying nun in another taped sketch with Lincoln star Sally Field, which ended with the two kissing.
"I honestly can't believe I'm here," MacFarlane said, adding, "It's an honor that everyone else said 'no.' From Oprah all the way to Ron Jeremy."
"Welcome to the Oscars. And the quest to make Tommy Lee Jones laugh begins now."
The first unexpected surprise came when William Shatner portrayed as Captain Kirk appeared on screen above MacFarlane's head from the future to tell him exactly how he ruined the show, and what he could do to fix it.
That prompted MacFarlane to show off his song and dance skills, performing "The Way You Look Tonight," with Charlize Theron and Magic Mike actor Channing Tatum. Daniel Radcliffe and Joseph Gordon-Levitt then joined MacFarlane for a version of "High Hopes."
MacFarlance got in jabs about Ben Affleck's Best Director snub for Argo and Daniel Day-Lewis attempt to stay-in-character during the filming of Lincoln.
"Daniel-Day Lewis is not the first actor to be nominated for playing Lincoln. Raymond Massey portrayed him in 1940′s Abe Lincoln in Illinois. I would argue, though, the actor who really got inside Lincoln's head was John Wilkes Booth." [the audience groans] "Really, 150 years and it's still too soon? I've got some Napoleon jokes coming up-you guys are going to be so mad," MacFarlane said.
On Ben Affleck: "This man has gone from starring in Gigli to becoming one of the most respected filmmakers of this generation...The first time I saw him with all that dark facial hair, I thought, My God, the Kardashians have finally made the jump to film."
On Django Unchained's excessive use f the "n-word," MarFarlane said, "This is the story of a man fighting to get back his woman, who's been subjected to unthinkable violence-or as Chris Brown or Rihanna call it, 'a date movie."
MacFarlane attempted to keep the jokes going throughout the night, at one pointing out the Oscars ceremony, which is held on Sunday, is like church, "but only with more people praying."
In the days leading up to the Oscars, MacFarlance told the Associated Press, "The Oscars does have a history of taking itself so deadly seriously. And while it obviously is a ceremony that's important to the people involved, you know we're not curing cancer here."
