On Sunday, Radio Times mentioned that the fifth season will revolve around babies being born with missing limbs and other shocking defects. This is part of the Thalidomide scandal and Turner is about to come across his own emotions about it especially after prescribing a drug to an expectant mother last season.

Stephen McGann, who plays the doctor, told the site that his character will feel "so very sad" about the whole ordeal.

"He always wanted to push the progress Britain was making for women, and that essentially is going to blow up horribly in his face. It is tough," McGann said. "The shock, the appalling sense of responsibility for those people in our care...I think doctors took a sort of collective guilt as a profession."

Even though tackling this storyline is a "privilege," it still comes with thicker skin.

"It's challenging for all of us," the actor said. "We all felt that the responsibility was incredible. On set it's been really moving. We hope we've done it justice."

McGann then pointed out how watching this can get people to think more critically.

"Television is so important as a form of communication," he said. "It has this amazing power. It can get people's minds going."

Call the Midwife Season 5 is expected to premiere in the United States on Sunday, April 3 on PBS.
