Newly released deleted scenes from Mrs. Doubtfire shows how the beloved comedy nearly turns into a drama.

Robin Williams' titular role as a father who pretends to be a maid in order to spend time with his children after splitting from his wife is remembered for its over-the-top comedic moments. But a new set of deleted footage reveals the true undertone of the film: a father desperate to remain in his children's lives.

Matthew Keys, a YouTube user posted three emotional deleted scenes from the film, all featuring Williams' character struggling to be a responsible father while divorced.

In the first scene, Daniel Hillard (Williams) is seen arriving late to his oldest daughter's spelling bee competition. As she takes the stage for her turn, he begins arguing with his ex-wife Miranda (Sally Fields), causing their daughter to become distracted and misspell a word.

Williams' tearful conversation after the spelling bee is especially heartbreaking when he must explain to his daughter that even though he isn't Mrs. Doubtfire anymore, he is still her father and sometimes that means making mistakes.

"It's a joy being your father," he says. "I don't have to pretend to be your father. I may act like a fool, but I am your father."

In the final (and most emotional) scene Daniel and Miranda are seen yelling downstairs as their three children listen on. It isn't until the kids come downstairs and one yells "I hate you!" that they realize the true impact their relationship has on them.
