Dr. Turner might face some serious issues on Call the Midwife if he doesn't give up one of his habits.

On Sunday, Radio Times shared details from Stephen McGann (Turner) who mentioned the consequences if his character continues to smoke.

"It's been coming for Doctor Turner," the actor said. "In the 1950s they were beginning to suss out the effects of smoking. There was a famous British Medical Journey study done. They wanted thousands of smokers to take part in a long-term survey and they wanted professional people who could be relied on to give good data. Who did they go to? The doctors. Our understanding was actually increased by the Doctor Turners of the world."

McGann added that Turner's smoking days "could be numbered." It's also something that people involved in the medical community will probably want to see.

"Very often doctors will come up to me, with good reason, and say, 'Please can you drop the smoking?' McGann said. "I'm not a smoker myself and I understand, and I say, 'It's authentic. It's what he would have done.'"

The actor then explained how the cigarettes really work while filming, something he's glad isn't too unhealthy.

"If I really had to smoke all the time I would just say no," he said. "They are herbal cigarettes, not nicotine. They are disgusting, but they are not nicotine. We don't rehearse with them and when we come to film it's a dramatic slight of hand. It looks like I am smoking more than I really am."

Call the Midwife Season 5 is expected to premiere in the United States on Sunday, April 3 on PBS.
