Chatter On Miss America Pageant 2015
"We've prayed constantly for a miracle, and we believe God has answered our prayers," the statement reads. "Although it's not the miracle that we first envisioned, it's a miracle nonetheless. In the end, it's not the years in your life that count. It's the life in your years...We all miss her now that she's gone."
McCollum's boyfriend, Keith Jones, also released a statement on his devastation as well as gratitude for all the support.
"Please accept our sincerest thanks for your heartfelt prayers," Jones wrote on Facebook. "Words fall short of describing the pain, but I'm eternally grateful and blessed for the time I spent with Cara. Her enormous heart enriched my life and changed me forever."
Police say that during the car accident, McCollum's vehicle veered off a road and hit a tree where it spun again and hit two more trees. She was reportedly not wearing a seatbelt and it's not believed that drugs or alcohol were involved.
McCollum became Miss New Jersey in 2013.
