'Veronica Mars' Movie Record Raises $2 Million in 1 Day
The "Veronica Mars" fundraiser holds the all-time record for the fastest project to reach $1 million on Kickstarter.com, after thousands of fans of the TV series stormed the website with donations to make the movie happen.
The fundraiser was launched today by the TV series' creator Rob Thomas and actress Kristen Bell (who starred as Veronica Mars) and it just four hours and 24 minutes, it reached the $1 million mark, a spokesman for the site told the Associated Press.
The "Veronica Mars- The Movie" also became the most funded film or video project on the site to date, according to the spokesman.
The goal was to raise $2 million and it was met in the first 11 hours. At the time of writing this story, the movie had raised $2.3 million.
"Hallelujah! It's a green light my friends. I love you all, but particularly the donors among you," wrote Thomas Wednensday night on his Facebook which has over 300,000 Likes.
"My mind is blown," he told Entertainment Weekly today. "I've been fantasizing about this taking big and had to tell myself, 'Stop it, Rob, you're being silly. You're setting yourself up for disappointment.'"
"And now today has exceeded the wildest pipe dream I let myself entertain. Holy cow. We better make a good movie. These amazing fans have stepped up.We better deliver."
The movie had been rumored to happen for many years but Warner Bros. wasn't convinced there was enough interest to warrant a major studio-sized movie about Veronica, creator Rob Thomas wrote on Kickstarter.com.
Now that the first $2 million have been gathered, Warner Bros. Digital Distribution will pay for the marketing, promotion and distrubution, according to Entertainment Weekly.
Thomas plans to go into production this summer and release the movie in early 2014.
The movie about a high-school spy from California, will be set on Veronica's 10-year high school reunion and while life has she hasn't taken a case in many years, something big is about to bring her back home and back to her calling, Thomas revealed on the fundraiser's website.
