Chris Christie Memes: How Super Tuesday Trump Rally Became A Must-See Internet Meme [VIDEO]
It should go without saying that Super Tuesday is kind of a big deal. It gives voters a strong idea of the candidates running for the Presidency, how the states could end up voting, and who might end up in the White House come November. And while it was indeed a big day for candidates of all political leanings, none of the frontrunners walked away with the focus of the crowd. Instead, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie (who recently suspended his own campaign for the presidency) unwittingly ended up the star of the evening. See how Christie became an internet superstar (and why that might not be good for him or the Republican party.
After Christie halted his bid for the White House, it came as something of a shock to people that he opted to endorse Donald Trump. Anyone who watched the debates could see there was no love lost between the two politicians, and more than once some truly hostile barbs had been tossed. But endorse Trump Christie did, and on Tuesday night he ended up at a rally for the would-be Republican nominee.
It was a simple enough program. All Christie had to do was introduce Donald Trump, then stand in silent support of the candidate; easy gig, right? But the cameras are always rolling, and as Christie listened to Trump's speech, his priceless reaction was captured for posterity. No matter what Trump was saying, it couldn't begin to match what was going on across Christie's face. Naturally, all of the footage streamed live. From there, it was just a matter of time before the internet ran with it.
To be fair, it's possible that Christie has more on his mind that Trump's rhetoric; his endorsement has rubbed a large number of voters and other politicians the wrong way. Newspapers across his home state of New Jersey are calling for his resignation, and his approval ratings are far from good. Was that what he was thinking about on Tuesday? Was he remembering his own failed campaign? So far Christie has not commented on the memes or his own reactions at the rally; meanwhile, the internet continues on its merry rampage.
Considering the simply countless number of memes devoted to Donald Trump (not to mention his hair), it's pretty impressive that he got upstaged at his own rally. But the quiet desperation and unguarded expressions on Christie's face make for far better viewing than Trump's trademark sloganeering.
Not everyone has been unsympathetic to Christie's plight. The profound misery on his face has led many to wonder just why he would endorse Trump, and if Trump has something on the New Jersey governor. Within minutes of the rally going live, the hashtag #FreeChrisChristie was trending on Twitter. This probably wasn't what Christie was aiming for when he opted to endorse Trump.
In all likelihood, someone from Trump's team will take Christie aside and explain that he needs to learn to adopt a more neutral expression when standing onstage behind the candidate. This will be a tragedy for the meme-makers of the world, but probably a good move for the Trump campaign.
Whatever side of the political fence you fall on, whichever candidate you're supporting come November, there's one thing we can all agree on: this campaign year has been a true blessing when it comes to memes. Just ask Chris Christie.
