'Bourne 5' Spoilers: What We Know So Far About 'Jason Bourne' [VIDEO]
The first official trailer for Jason Bourne was unveiled at the Super Bowl earlier this month.
The 30-second clip begins with Jason (Matt Damon) in a raw boxing match, carrying on to reintroduce fans to the man of the series. The CIA team, headed by Robert Dewey (Tommy Lee Jones), is seen pretty flabbergasted by his return. "Why would he come back now?" Dewey is seen asking.
Jason is also seen talking to Nicky Parsons (Julia Stiles) about his motives. "I know who I am, I remember everything," he says.
"Remembering everything doesn't mean you know everything," Nicky says in reply.
Then a voice over plays, probably Nicky speaking, adding that "the world is at war and we need the perfect weapon."
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Damon talked about working on Jason Bourne and dished a bit about where fans will find his character at the start of the film.
Talking to EW, Damon revealed that Jason will obviously be dealing with some conflict which causes him to come back, and this time around he remembers everything and who he is, but that doesn't spell resolution.
"Well I don't know how much I should say. [Laughs] We talked a lot about what state he should be in, and where we came to was that if you found him fat and happy and content, you don't really have a movie. So we talked about how at the end ofBourne Ultimatum, he gets his memory back and it kind of completed that identity journey for him," he said. "But does that complete things for the character or not? And the conclusion we came to is no - we find him in a very dark and tortured place. He's living with the same things as he was before, and then he goes to find Julia Stiles' character, who basically says, "Just because you remember everything, doesn't mean you know everything." So you find him in a place that's dark and unresolved."
Damon went on to add that this movie was not a chapter in itself and can essentially be absorbed in the trilogy.
"This is the completion of this journey that started in the Bourne Identity. It's part of the first three [movies], it's not a whole new chapter," he said. "It feels like the conclusion, even though we're not saying it's the conclusion, it feels like the conclusion of my identity journey. It goes deeper than Ultimatum, basically."
Damon also spoke about Alicia Vikander's character in the film.
"You have to do something great and new, and Alicia is our great and new. She plays a new character we're introducing, and she's a specialist in cyber. Instead of just the three arenas of warfare - air, land and sea - there's now this fourth element: cyber," she said. "The implications of that are huge, and she's representing that in the movie. We also have Tommy Lee Jones in the movie, and he's kind of representing the analog CIA in the way the old guard thinks. Those two go head to head quite a bit. Introducing those two new characters, I think, is probably one of the biggest trailblazing things we've done in this movie. One thing about these movies is that the casts are so good. I always feel so amazed at the people we get. If we have any kind of formula, it's hiring the very best actors we can to fill out these roles, and Alicia and Tommy Lee are two absolute heavyweights."
In an interview with The Wrap, Vikander spoke about her experience working on Jason Bourne.
Vikander revealed that her character will not be toeing the predictable action routine in the movie.
"I'm not doing the conventional action but I'm very action-driven in this film," Vikander said. "But it's not in the way most people would think."
While little is known about the film, Matt Damon did reveal some details in an interview with Variety.
The actor revealed that his character Jason Bourne would have been off the grid for about 12 years when he returns in the movie.
"...you'll find the character--like The Bourne Ultimatum, the third act actually in the movie dovetails with the third act of The Bourne Supremacy. So technically when the Bourne character disappears, it's still 2004," he said. "So when this next one comes out in '16, it will have been 12 years--in movie years--that the character as been off the grid. So what's happened in those intervening years gives you a story."
Damon also spoke about the filming schedule, and it seems like filming might be on its way to completion right about now.
"We started in September but they're going dark for most of December and cutting basically the first two acts," he said. "And then we have the third act and then whatever we owe from the first two acts."
In another interview with BuzzFeed, Damon dished a bit about the movie. "Without giving too much of it away, it's Bourne through an austerity-riddled Europe and in a post-Snowden world," he said. "It seems like enough has changed, you know? There are all these kinds of arguments about spying and civil liberties and the nature of democracy." Paul Greengrass, who directed The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum, will be helming this installment as well.
Jason Bourne is expected to release on July 29, 2016.
