During his visit to Brazil last week to collect his winnings at the Laureus World Sports Awards, Michael Phelps assured fans that he will not be continuing his swimming career.

He picked up his Exceptional Achievement Award, and Phelps, who is retired said he is looking forward to returning to Rio de Janeiro to attend the 2016 Summer Olympics- as a spectator.

The 27-year-old made the most of his relaxing vacation by visiting famous beaches with his agent, taking advantage of the relaxing and upbeat atmosphere of Rio, Belga News Navigator reported.

"It has been an amazing career and it is crazy to think that it is over," Phelps said, according to UPI.com. "But I've done everything that I wanted to do in the sport."

The Laureus award honored his record win of 22 Olympic medals, the most of any athlete in any sport.

Phelps said he wanted to dedicate time to other projects.

"I wanted to change swimming and take it to a level, and I have. But I will continue to be a part of sport and help grow sports. That is a goal and a passion of mine," he said.

Phelps announced his retirement after last year's London Olympics, where he won four gold and two silver medals.
