Clive Mantle, Game Of Thrones Actor Ear Bitten Off By Man in English Hotel; Ear Re-Attached, "Shaken Up" After Attack
Game of Thrones actor Clive Mantle, who played Greatjon Umber, a Northern lord, in the first season of the popular HBO series, had part of his ear bitten off during an attack at an English hotel, according to the BBC.
Mantle, 55, who stands 6'5", had to undergo surgery to save his ear following the attack which occurred at a Travelodge in the British city of Newcastle early Sunday morning.
Mantle, who also appeared on the long-running BBC medical drama Casualty, was part of a touring production of The Ladykillers at a Newcastle theater.
According to the BBC, a 32-year-old man from South Lanarkshire has been charged with wounding with intent and will appear before Newcastle Magistrates in April.
Another man was been released on bail in connection with the attack and a third man released without any charges being filed.
Mantle was reportedly attacked at around 4:30 a.m. on Sunday after he requested other hotel guests to keep the noise down.
A spokesman for Mantle's agent said police officers and emergency medical personnel were dispatched to the scene of the assault and that the top part of his ear, which had been severed in the attack, was re-attached by Royal Victoria Infirmary surgeons.
Laura Myers, a publicist for the play Mantle was starring in, said the actor does not yet know if or when he will be able to rejoin The Ladykillers cast.
"Fiery Angel, producers of The Ladykillers, are horrified by the events of Sunday morning and are doing everything they can to ensure Clive has a speedy recovery," Myers told BBC.
The tall actor will see a specialist in Oxford tomorrow to see if the surgical procedure was successful but he is currently still in shock from the attack, according to his representation.
"He is very badly shaken up," a spokesman told the BBC. "He sounds very wobbly."
The Game of Thrones series returns to HBO on March 31.
