Shadowhunters' Jace Wayland is in the wind.

The embattled demon hunter followed his murderous father into a portal at the end of "Morning Star," looking for all the world like he was throwing his lot in with Valentine's (Alan Van Sprang) men. Mortal Instruments fans know that City of Bones ended on a very different note, and viewers will have to wait until season 2 for writers to unravel this latest twist.

"We should be very worried about Jace," showrunner Ed Decter said, according to TV Line. "As fans of the books know, he's about to take a very dark journey."

Valentine has a special brand of evil running through his ice-cold veins. As his son, Jace (Dominic Sherwood) fears above all else that he will inherit his father's malicious ways. If sheer intensity can be converted into hatred, perhaps the fair-haired hero is right.

"There's darkness within him, and for the first time, he doesn't know how to stand on his own two feet," Sherwood told TV Line. "His past was all a lie, so everything he relied on in his upbringing and training is all fabricated. He's really struggling with his identity...You can definitely expect us to explore the dichotomy of good and evil within Jace."

As with the entire season 1 storyline, viewers should prepare for shocks at every turn. No matter how many times you've thumbed the pages of Cassandra Clare's novels, there is no way to predict where the Shadowhunters writers will take the tale next.

"The goal in the writers' room is to make the fans feel like we're not going to end up in the place they're expecting, then surprise them with how we get there," Decter teased.
