‘Artist’ Dog to Retire Due to Mystery Illness
He's the breakout star in the Oscar-nominated movie The Artist, but the handsome actor will end his career after Hollywood's biggest night.
Uggie the dog is suffering from a mystery disease that causes the poor pooch to shake.
"It's very sad, but he is suffering from a mystery shaking syndrome," Uggie's trainer, Omar Von Muller, told The Daily Mail. "We've spent thousands trying to figure out what is causing it, but the experts don't really know."
According to Von Muller, Uggie started shaking before The Artist began filming. The illness apparently strikes at any time, but worsens when Uggie is relaxed. "When we were filming you could hardly notice it," he said. The scene-stealing tailwagger co-stars with the human actor Jean Dujardin.
While tests confirm the disorder is neurological, veterinarians haven't been able to pinpoint the disease. They do say, though, that the 10-year-old Jack Russell isn't in any pain.
"For The Artist, we were working 15-hour days and I can't put him through that again," Von Muller said.
Uggie will unleash his talents once more when he opens the Oscars with host Billy Crystal, then leave the silver screen behind to enjoy, well, a dog's life.
