Fans of Team Iron Man can breath a sigh of relief--at leas one member of the pro-registration army will make it through Captain America: Civil War in one piece.
Civil War is no less than two weeks away, and, while we know which side will ultimately win, we still don't which hero will take the fall. As comic book readers know Mark Millar's 2006 series ends with a fairly devastating death. Ever since directors Joe and Anthony Russo teased their film as a departure from the series, fans have been hoping the ending will get a switch up. Unfortunately, a new casting announcement has knocked one potential corpse out of the running.
SPOILERS AHEAD
If Civil War was to follow the major plot points of the comic books, Captain America 3's titular hero would land six feet under before the finale credits. Had the Russo's planned to mix it up a little, the May film would could have been a perfect time to replace Iron Man (Robert Downey, Jr.). After all, Downey is getting a little long in the tooth for the action-packed role, a fact the actor has lamented on multiple occasions.
Now, however, it looks as if Downey's Iron Man will come out of the scrape stronger than ever. The genius billionaire playboy philanthropist will have a role to play in Sony/Marvel's 2017 Spider-Man: Homecoming, according to Deadline. Stark is rumored to have a mentor/mentee relationship with the web slinger, and it looks as if the pair will carry that partnership well past Civil War.
So, will Cap (Chris Evans) really bite the dust this spring? All we know for sure is that the film will certainly leave fans talking.
"The consequences of Civil War will have an even more significant impact [than The Winter Soldier]. In Civil War, we're going to change the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Psychology, and it's an extreme shift," co-director Joe Russo told Empire (via Comic Book Movie). "[There is a] very dramatic ending that will be controversial for a lot of people."
