When Luke Bryan was presented with the trophy for Entertainer of the Year at the Academy of Country Music Awards, he was left speechless.

“It was like I was on the tilt-a-whirl,” said a stunned Bryan.

He beat Miranda Lambert, two-time entertainer of the year Taylor Swift, and top male stars Blake Shelton and Jason Aldean. He also beat Carrie Underwood, despite the success of her Blown Away album and tour.

The country singer hugged the trophy and hung his head upon receiving the award. He was reportedly fighting back tears as members of the crowd at the MGM Grand shouted, “Luke!”

“I don’t think there was anyone in the room more shocked than him,” said Aldean, according to The Christian Science Monitor. “That’s why I love him.”

Bryan received a lot of support before the awards ceremony due to his role as the show’s co-host with Shelton. The idea of winning Entertainer of the Year was the last thing as his mind as the singer prepared to be Reba McEntire’s replacement on the show, according to the report.

Bryan told reporters after receiving his award that his focus was primarily on his hosting duties, and he had trouble remembering what categories he was nominated in.

The ACM winner recently started his own tour and had reportedly thought it was too early to win an award, which is usually given to veteran performers who were almost universally acclaimed.
