Katy Perry Madagascar Trip: UNICEF Journey Opened Her Eyes, Singer Says [VIDEO]
Katy Perry has been in Madagascar for only a few days, but she is already having a good time jumping rope with local children in the country.
"In less than one week here in Madagascar, I went from crowded city slums to the most remote villages and my eyes were widely opened by the incredible need for a healthy life - nutrition, sanitation, and protection against rape and abuse," the Part of Me singer said in a release from UNICEF, referring to the trip she took last week.
During her first visit in support of the organization, the singer saw different elements of the country: from the education system, the nutrition program, and health and child protection, to water, sanitation and hygiene. She began her trip in the capital of Antananarivo, where Perry visited a child protection center, and met abused and abandoned children and young mothers, according to UNICEF. She also took time to visit a pre-school and a primary school supported by UNICEF.
On April 5, Perry joined girls jumping rope during her visit to a primary school in the village of Ampihaonana in the Analanjirofo Region. There she learned that children and teachers walk 45 minutes just to get to school and at another school, she participated in hand-washing with the kids.
