When LG launched the G5, many were impressed with the company's bold decision to incorporate modules to the main smartphone. Dubbed as the G5's "Friends," the additional modules added specific functionalities to the device. Now, Motorola seems to be following LG's trend, going further and introducing a series of swappable, functional backplates for its Moto Z smartphone.

According to a leaked image by Evan "Evleaks" Blass, the Moto Z would be fully compatible with special swappable backplates. These cases, rumored to be called "MotoMods," are speculated to give the Moto Z added functionalities, much like the G5's Friends. Unlike the design of the G5's modules, however, Motorola's MotoMods encompass the entire rear of the device, radically changing the appearance of the Moto Z.

From what could be seen in the video below, the MotoMods would have dedicated functionalities. The one in front of the image, for one, is obviously a camera module. From a previous leak which allegedly showed the list of MotoMods, the camera module could very well be the "Pro Camera" MotoMod.

Indeed, the design of the camera module in the leaked image seems to feature a full-fledged optical zoom, possibly giving the smartphone DSLR-like capabilities.

Though the two other MotoMods featured in the leaked image are quite difficult to determine, a number of Motorola fans are suggesting that one of the MotoMods seems to feature an additional battery, mainly due to the thickness of the cover.

What is particularly interesting about the Moto Z's MotoMods is the sheet variety of functions that the swappable rear covers are set to feature. From a previously leaked list, the MotoMods were branded as "Adventure," "Theater," "Stereo," "Style" and of course, "Pro Camera."

Though Motorola has been very secretive about the details of the rumored MotoMods, many fans are speculating that the Theater rear cover would sport a pico projector while the Stereo MotoMod would feature powerful stereo speakers. The Adventure MotoMod is also speculated to be-be equipped with a hefty battery.

The Moto Z is set to be revealed during Lenovo's Tech World, which would be held on June 9 in San Francisco.
