Was Nicki Minaj's Grammy performance insulting to Catholics? The head of the Catholic League thinks so.

The religious organization's president issued a press release titled "Is Nicki Minaj Possessed?" after the rapper's exorcism-inspired performance last night.

"None of this was by accident, and all of it was approved by The Recording Academy, which puts on the Grammys," stated Bill Donahue. "Whether Minaj is possessed is surely an open question, but what is not in doubt is the irresponsibility of The Recording Academy. Never would they allow an artist to insult Judaism or Islam."

Donahue continued, "It's bad enough that Catholics have to fight for their rights vis-à-vis a hostile administration in Washington without also having to fend off attacks in the entertainment industry. The net effect, however, will only embolden Catholics, as well as their friends in other faith communities."

Minaj's set included everything from a priest to dancers dressed as altar boys to speaking in tongues and levitation. The rapper even walked the red carpet with a look-alike Pope.

Minaj told Ryan Seacrest on his KIIS-FM radio show that she was actually playing the part of a man named Roman, one of the alter egos in a movie she's writing.

"His name is Roman and the religious figure is there because he was called on by Roman's mom to rehabilitate him," she offered by way of explanation. Say what?

The View's Sherri Shepherd tweeted, "Watching Nicki Minaj ... I didn't know whether to dance or pull out my Bible and lay hands on the tv... 2 old for the #Grammys..."
