Pippa Middleton is officially engaged - and family and friends are already reacting.

Middleton is engaged to her boyfriend, financier James Matthews, the couple revealed in a new statement.

"Miss Pippa Middleton and Mr James Matthews are delighted to announce they became engaged on Sunday, July 17 and plan to marry next year," a new statement reveals. Michael Middleton, Pippa's father, said to the Press Association that he is "absolutely thrilled," adding that his daughter and Matthews are a "wonderful couple."

While the couple intends to marry in 2017, the specific date has not yet been revealed to the public.

"Mike and Carole [Middleton] are very happy," a family friend said, according to the Daily Mail. "They like James and they are sure he will make Pippa very happy."

Another source told People that Mike and Carole approve greatly of the coupling.

"Her parents really do like him a lot and he spends quite a lot of time with the Middletons. Carole in particular is very approving. Everyone agrees that they are very well-suited in many ways," the source said.

A different friend said that Pippa was "completely and totally surprised" by Matthews' proposal, which reportedly took place on Sunday at the Lake District in Northwest England, though she quickly said yes.

"I saw them a couple of months walking around the village - just casually strolling through the woods having a chat. They seemed very happy together," a family friend told People recently. "It's wonderful news. I've met James and a he's a really nice guy."

The couple had previously dated for about one year.

Pippa's sister, Kate Middleton, has been engaged to Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, since 2011. They have two children together, Prince George and Princess Charlotte. Pippa and Kate's other sibling, brother James Middleton, is not married.

More to come.
