Katy Perry John Mayer Break Up, Inspires New Music? 'Writing is Like Therapy,' She Says [VIDEO]
Katy Perry said she uses all her secrets and personal experiences as inspiration for new music, and many are wondering if her recent split from John Mayer will be used to form heartbreak ballets.
The Fireworks singer said her songs are her "lockbox" of secrets and added that though she sometimes addresses ex-boyfriends, their names will never be revealed in lyrics. She does, however, use songwriting as a way to heal her broken heart.
"Maybe I'm not specific with names, but that's my lockbox where all my secrets go. Writing is like therapy," she said. ''They all [songs] stem from the truth inside of me. I just want songs to be relatable, and to be adopted as someone else's soundtrack.''
Perry broke up with John Mayer in February and was married to Russell Brand for 14 months until their divorce in December 2011. The 28-year-old sometimes releases what many consider controversial songs and she said she saved I Kissed a Girl until her big break because she knew it would get people talking.
''I had something to prove, but I knew exactly what I was doing. I knew I had Hot N Cold up my sleeve, and Thinking of You and Waking up in Vegas," she said, according to Britain's OK! magazine. "Even if those weren't going to chart, I was putting out I Kissed a Girl first so it would open the most doors. It was more risqué than the other ones, but it would get people talking.''
Mayer confirmed his breakup with Perry on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on March 2, only weeks after headlines broke the news. He said his time with Perry "was a very private relationship during, and it's a private relationship, still."
"I can understand asking the question based on some previous answers I have given, but I have finally learned how to put the wall between one thing and the other," he added. "I've been much happier since then. I'm on the same journey as everyone else. Coupling is a tricky thing. It's a tricky thing."
