Will Justin Timberlake’s voting selfie get him in legal trouble?
OMG! What has Justin Timberlake done? In his excitement to encourage people to cast vote, Justin Timberlake, an American singer and actor, has posted a selfie in a Tennessee voting booth. The actor posted the picture in his Instagram Account.
According to Mail Online, the 35-year-old celebrity flew to his home state Tennessee on Monday, voted at the New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church in Germantown and posted his own picture while casting his vote.
He posted the photo of himself in a pooling station on social media, asking people to get out and vote. His "voting booth picture" at Instagram has started discussions about whether he was breaking the law or just persuading people to go out and utilize their voting power.
The actor and pop star flew from California to Tennessee to vote early this week.
So, what's wrong with that? Well, taking photographs or video inside voting booth is prohibited, according to Tennessee law. A person who violates this rule can be jailed for 30 days and fined USD 50.
According to post in The Telegraph, Amy Weirich of Shelby County District Attorney General said, "nobody in our office is currently investigating this matter nor will we be using our limited resources to do so."
There are different rules and regulations in various states when it comes to sharing any ballot photo. Some states like Maine discourage the practice, while others penalize ballot selfies, including Illinois and Memphis.
Until now, nobody from Timberlake's team has commented on the matter.
Are voting selfies illegal? Is it something unconstitutional done by anyone, famous or not? Did he post this picture to encourage people to use their voting power? Is the ban on ballot selfie unconstitutional, and does it suppress freedom of speech? Can ballot photos influence people's political beliefs?
