Selena Gomez Update: What is Lupus? Singer Has Been In Rehab [VIDEO]
What is Lupus?
For the past several weeks, Selena Gomez has been treating symptoms of Lupus in rehab and as fans prepare for her highly anticipated return to the spotlight, we're learning more about what the illness is.
Below is a description of Lupus shared by CNN at the end of August.
"Lupus is a chronic disease that can affect any part of the body -- typically the skin, joints, blood and kidneys, according to the Lupus Foundation of America. The immune systems of lupus sufferers essentially go haywire, and instead of fighting off viruses and bacteria with antibodies, their bodies create autoantibodies that attack healthy tissue. Symptoms can include fatigue, fever, weight loss, painful joints, rash, hearing loss, anemia, abnormal bloating and mouth ulcers."
In August, Gomez released a statement to People Magazine about her plans to take some time off to focus on her health.
“As many of you know, around a year ago I revealed that I have lupus, an illness that can affect people in different ways,” she said in a statement. “I’ve discovered that anxiety, panic attacks and depression can be side effects of lupus, which can present their own challenges.”
Although Gomez's appearance at tomorrow night's American Music Awards hasn't been confirmed by Gomez herself, she is expected to be seen during the show. E! News was first to speak of Gomez's potential attendance at tomorrow night's event.
