'Cars 3' Release: Lightning McQueen Goes Through Horrors In Surprisingly Dark Trailer [VIDEO]
The new trailer for Cars 3 has the internet abuzz due to its rather dark and mature undertones.
Pixar has released the first teaser trailer for Cars 3, the third installment in their massively successful franchise. The tone of the trailer is very serious and dramatic, compared to the fun action of the first two movies.
Lightning McQueen (voiced by Owen Wilson) is in a high-octane race in the trailer, with footage cutting in and out from black. The car then starts spinning out of control and we hear an announcer saying, "McQueen is fading. Fading fast." Lightning McQueen then goes flying through the air, clearly mangled.
"From this moment, everything will change," reads a title card, before the dramatic "Summer 2017" is revealed.
So is Pixar taking a turn towards more mature themes with Cars 3? The synopsis for the movie was also revealed in the caption of the trailer, revealing that the film will follow Lightning McQueen as he goes through a setback and subsequently tries to find his way back up.
"Blindsided by a new generation of blazing-fast racers, the legendary Lightning McQueen (voice of Owen Wilson) is suddenly pushed out of the sport he loves," the synopsis reads. "To get back in the game, he will need the help of an eager young race technician, Cruz Ramirez, with her own plan to win, plus inspiration from the late Fabulous Hudson Hornet and a few unexpected turns. Proving that #95 isn't through yet will test the heart of a champion on Piston Cup Racing's biggest stage!"
Cars 3 is set for release in theaters on June 16, 2017.
Meanwhile, many on Twitter have made jokes about the sudden dark turn for the Cars franchise:
