David Bowie Grammys: 'Blackstar' Legend Snubbed From Album of the Year, Fans Outraged [POLL, VIDEO]
Late music legend David Bowie was not nominated for Album of the Year at this year's Grammys, which has been a controversial decision among fans to say the least.
The Grammy nominations for 2017 were announced Tuesday morning and among the snubs and surprises was a shocking omission of Bowie's final album, Blackstar, in Album of the Year. The album was predicted by music experts to be nominated for the big category but was not one of the five albums chosen by the Recording Academy.
Instead, the nominees for Album of the Year were:
Adele - 25
Beyoncé - Lemonade
Justin Bieber - Purpose
Drake - Views
Sturgill Simpson - A Sailor's Guide to Earth
Blackstar, Bowie's 25th and final studio album, was released just two days before his death on Jan. 8. Considering his impact on music and his legendary career, it could have been a fitting tribute to commemorate his legacy by nominating him in Album of the Year, but it seems the Recording Academy simply did not deem the album good enough for the honor.
Various Twitter users have reacted in anger over Bowie being snubbed, especially in favor of more modern yet divisive acts like Bieber and Drake.
The Grammys did not totally snub Bowie, though. The album is nominated in Best Alternative Music Album, Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical and Best Recording Package, while the title track is nominated for Best Rock Performance and Best Rock Song.
The 2017 Grammys will air live Sunday, Feb. 12 at 8/7c on CBS, hosted by James Corden.
