One Direction took home the Top New Artist Award at the Billboard Music Awards on Sunday night.

Also up for the award were Carly Rae Jepsen, Gotye, PSY and The Lumineers. One Direction was up for eight trophies, with awards including Top Artist, Top Duo/ Group, Top Billboard 200 Artist, Top Social Artist and Top Pop Artist.

Their albums, Take Me Home and Up All Night, were nominated for the Top Billboard 200 Album, and both were nominated for Top Pop Album. In a battle of the exes, Taylor Swift and One Direction - featuring Swift’s ex-boyfriend - were both competing for Top Artist, Top Billboard 200 Artist, Top Social Artist and Top Billboard 200 Artist.

The awards ceremony aired live from MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on ABC.

Comedian/actor Tracy Morgan hosted the Billboard Music Awards.

One Direction has recently announced their plans to come out with a new album and a world tour for 2014, the Where We Are Tour.

The group's members - Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik - revealed details about their album and specific dates of upcoming concerts at a press conference last week at Wembley Stadium in London.
